What is Bushcraft?

In 2017, I took a short-term role as an assistant bushcraft instructor however, at the time I had never heard of bushcraft so had no idea what it was. I took the job anyway and was glad that I did as I met a fantastic group of people who introduced me to ‘Bushcraft’ and I absolutely loved it.

So what is ‘Bushcraft’ exactly? Well bushcraft consists of a number of wilderness survival skills. Bushcraft has been phrased around the world as ‘Wilderness Skills’, ‘Woodcraft’ and ‘Woodlore’. Essentially bushcraft is about acquiring the skills and knowledge to thrive out in the natural environment.

Bushcraft courses here in the UK, tend to teach the following topics:

  • Fire
  • Water
  • Knife law and safety
  • Shelter building
  • Leave no trace
  • Natural cordage
  • Natural navigation
  • Tree ID and uses

There are also numerous skills and natural crafts linked to bushcraft and survival including:

  • Foraging
  • Camp cooking
  • Axe use
  • Leather craft
  • Wood carving
  • Knife making and tool forging
  • Basket weaving
  • Navigation – Map & compass
  • Net making

Plus many more.

So on my learning journey I want to master the basics as well as have a go at learning and experiencing some of the many skills and crafts. and I plan on documenting this via this blog and my youtube channel ‘Vixen Bushcraft’.
